Positively Pavlovian

I hate to admit this...

but here it goes...

I am a smart dog!

Mom tells me that being a smart dog is not a good thing - it just means I'm a bad dog.  What do you think?

Here's a couple cases where I think that I am super stupendous smart and mom thinks I'm the worst dog EVER!

We live in a complex that consists of 120 townhouses and condos so mom is very conscious about how much noise we make.  I enjoy barking at people that pass by our backyard so that they know not to enter.  Sometimes, I may get a bit carried away and that's when mom will call me in by saying she has a cookie for me.  Hey!  Who wouldn't come for a cookie?

Well, a couple of months ago mom caught onto my game...  she was sitting at the dining room table and could see me out in the backyard.

It seems I may have been barking and then looking over my shoulder to see if she was going to call me in for a cookie and if I didn't get the required response, I would bark again...

Does that make me a bad dog???

Since she's caught on to that one she comes out and escorts me into the house and its a hit or miss on the cookie front...

But I thought of something else and luckily for me, my mom is a bit slow on the uptake some days.

My newest thing is to go bonkers on the patio door like I REALLY need to go out but when she opens the door, I run back to the cookie dispensing area.

Of course, because she's so well trained, she automatically gives me (and Pippen) a cookie.  Sometimes I'd do that 3 or 4 times before I would actually go outside!

Well, she's figured that one out now too and can you believe it - she says I am the baddest dog ever!

So am I a smart dog or am I a bad dog???

  5. Good thing my chi's went outside for a bit before I read this. I'd hate for them to get any ideas!

My dad's beagle who just passed away in May was also very smart. She got into all kinds of trouble. She was just the sweetest little dog though so it was always hard to be mad at her for long.

  6. We think you're smart, 'cause you've trained her so well. Too bad she's smart, too.

  8. Humans are so dumb. I sit outside and howl to come in but then I don't unless there is a cookie. Of course if the DOH has to come out and get me then she is all grouchy and there is no cookie. PeeWee is so weird about pee'ing in the yard that he usually gets a cookie if he does it. But I know that sometimes at night when he is invisible he just goes out and hides for a couple of minutes and then pretends that he went potty.

  9. You are very smart. It just takes some time to get our pesky humans trained properly!

  10. Oscar's smart too! I wouldn't say he is a bad dog - you either - but smart dogs do think of new and exciting ways to get into trouble! Maybe mischievous would be a good word.
